Firefighter Fitness Requirements
Physical robustness is non-negotiable. Learn exactly what is required to pass the National Firefighter Selection Test (NFST).
1. The Aerobic Test (VO2 Max)
This is the most common stumbling block. You must demonstrate a VO2 Max of 42.3 ml/kg/min.
Most services measure this using the 20m Shuttle Run (Bleep Test). You must reach Level 8, Shuttle 8.
2. The Ladder Climb
Tests your confidence at height and physical coordination. You will wear full PPE and a harness.
- Climb a 13.5m ladder to the \"head\" (approx 3 stories).
- Take a leg lock (secure yourself to the ladder).
- Lean back and identify a symbol or number on the ground.
- Descend safely in a controlled manner.
3. Casualty Evacuation
Simulates dragging an unconscious casualty from a fire.
You must drag a 55kg dummy backwards around a 30m course. You will be guided by an instructor. Grip strength and leg power are essential here.
Other Core Tests
Enclosed Space
Negotiate a crawlway wearing a breathing apparatus mask with obscured vision. Tests for claustrophobia.
Equipment Carry
Shuttle run carrying various equipment (hose reels, foam drums) within a time limit. Tests muscular endurance.
Manual Dexterity
Assemble and disassemble a piece of equipment (often a pump casing) against the clock.
