Firefighter CPD payments explained

A CPD payment may appear as a separate addition on a firefighter payslip. The amount, eligibility and pension treatment can be local, so the payslip itself and your service policy are the reliable starting points.

Step 1

Find the exact line

Look for CPD, continuous professional development, competence or a similar payroll label. Do not assume that a payment from another service applies to you.

Step 2

Check the pay period

Monthly and four-weekly payroll produce 12 and 13 payments a year. Compare the same period before annualising a figure.

Step 3

Confirm the treatment

Ask whether the line is pensionable, taxable and included during leave or absence. Those details affect the deduction and net-pay comparison.

Why there is no invented “national CPD rate” here

The national NJC pay scale supplies basic role rates, but it does not establish one universal CPD payment for every UK fire and rescue service. Publishing unsourced service-by-service numbers would make a payslip checker look precise while making it less trustworthy.

The checker therefore defaults local additions to zero. Copy the exact CPD amount from the period you are checking, then compare basic pay, overtime, pension, tax and National Insurance line by line.

What to do if the line looks wrong

Keep the payslip, note the period and ask payroll which policy or agreement controls the payment. If needed, speak to HR or your representative. The calculator is an independent comparison, not proof of entitlement.
