Aerobic assessment

In the 20-metre bleep test, the pace increases by level and the candidate must reach each line in time. Several services publish level 8.8 as the required result. Other services use the Chester treadmill test or another validated assessment.

Train for the format you will face. Steady running builds a base, while turning, progressive pacing and test familiarity are separate skills.

Job-related practical tests

Common tasks include ladder climb, ladder lift, casualty evacuation, equipment carry, enclosed-space movement and equipment assembly. They assess controlled technique, strength, endurance, manual dexterity and the ability to follow safety instructions.

The ladder lift often uses a simulator with a bar around 30kg, but exact equipment and instructions come from the service.

Prepare without guessing

Use official familiarisation sessions when offered. Build training gradually, allow recovery and seek appropriate health advice if you have symptoms or a medical condition. Do not use an unofficial pass mark where the recruitment pack states something different.

Frequently asked questions

What bleep-test level do firefighters need?

Level 8.8 is published by many services, but candidates must use the standard in their own current recruitment pack.

Is the fitness test only running?

No. Practical job-related tests commonly assess lifting, carrying, climbing, enclosed spaces and manual tasks.
