FAQs about checking firefighter pay

?Why doesn’t this match my payslip exactly?+

This tool gives an estimate. Differences usually come from your tax code, NI category, pension scheme rules, and whether some elements are pensionable or non-pensionable in your service.

?What should I enter as ‘Basic salary’ to match my payslip?+

If your payslip has a ‘Basic salary’ (or similar) line for the pay period, use that. It usually produces the closest hourly rate, especially where local contractual adjustments apply.

?Are overtime and allowances pensionable?+

It depends on your service and scheme rules. Many allowances and some premium payments can be non-pensionable. Use this as a quick check, then confirm pensionable elements with your HR/payroll guidance if you’re investigating an underpayment.

?Does this calculate tax and National Insurance accurately?+

It uses 2026/27 Income Tax and employee National Insurance thresholds, with Scottish tax bands where selected. Real payroll can still differ due to tax code, student loan, salary sacrifice, NI category and cumulative PAYE treatment.

?Can I use this for 4-weekly pay?+

Yes — choose monthly or 4-weekly. The calculator annualises your gross to estimate deductions and then shows the per-period breakdown.
