Identify why you worked

A normally rostered duty, an additional voluntary shift and a recall are different payroll events. Record the start and finish, reason for attendance and whether the work replaced another duty.

Find the contractual outcome

The outcome may involve ordinary pay, an enhancement, time off or a combination depending on the relevant terms. A national overtime rate in a pay circular does not by itself establish entitlement for every bank-holiday hour.

Audit in the right order

First confirm gross hours and the contractual rate or leave credit. Then check the pay period and deductions. Tax does not explain a missing gross entitlement, and payroll timing can put the payment in a later month.

Frequently asked questions

Is every firefighter bank holiday paid double time?

Do not assume that. Use the Grey Book and your service’s local duty-system agreement for the specific circumstances.

What evidence should I keep?

Keep the roster, approval, hours worked, local policy and the payslip period in which payment should appear.
