Start with the payment name

Match every addition on the payslip to the contract, local agreement or payroll code. Similar-looking amounts can represent very different things: permanent responsibility, temporary cover, reimbursement or a payment for a particular duty system.

The national circular records the headline rates and the 2026 increase to CPD payments, while the Grey Book and local documents provide the employment context.

Ask whether it is pensionable

Taxable does not automatically mean pensionable. For each recurring payment, ask payroll or the scheme administrator whether it counts as pensionable pay, which scheme rule applies and whether member contributions are already deducted from it.

Build a reliable household figure

Use permanent basic pay as the floor. Add only payments you are contractually likely to keep, and model irregular allowances or cover separately. Mortgage lenders and benefit assessments can apply their own evidence rules to variable income.

Frequently asked questions

Do all firefighters receive the same allowances?

No. Eligibility depends on role, location, duty system, qualifications and local agreement.

Is London weighting in the national salary table?

The national table is the baseline. Location-related additions should be confirmed with the employing service.
