The GMFRS shift pattern in one paragraph

GMFRS's own recruitment pages are short but clear on the headline. Its careers page lists a 42-hour working week and a structured 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off shift pattern for firefighters, alongside starting leave of 30 days rising to 33 after five years. The same pages distinguish 'Wholetime Shift Duty stations' from 'Day Crewing' stations, so there are at least two duty systems for operational firefighters in Greater Manchester. GMFRS's employer page on Greater.Jobs says the service runs 41 fire stations across 493 square miles and serves about 2.87 million residents.

Two days, two nights and four off is the 2-2-4 family used by most English wholetime services, with an eight-day cycle that averages 42 hours a week when the four shifts add up to 48 hours. What varies from service to service is the clock: where the day ends and the night begins. GMFRS's careers pages do not state the times, so the timing section below explains what we found and how solid each piece is. The general arithmetic behind 2-2-4 rotas is in our firefighter shift patterns guide.

If you are about to join, transfer or plan childcare around the rota, treat this guide as a map rather than a contract. Confirm the start time, your watch and your first duty date with GMFRS, your station or your offer paperwork before relying on any third-party page, including this one.

Day and night shifts: start times, lengths and history

The start of the day is the best-sourced time. In a May 2026 article by the Greater Manchester Apprenticeship and Careers Service (GMACS), a GMFRS Watch Manager describes a day shift beginning at half past eight in the morning with the change of watch, followed by an appliance check. That is consistent with GMFRS's day crewing page, where the weekday on-station period also begins at 08:30.

For the length of each shift, the clearest published figure is older. In September 2016 Public Sector Executive reported that GMFRS was pressing its firefighters to accept 12-hour day and night shifts in place of the existing 10.5-hour days and 13.5-hour nights. A 10.5-hour day starting at 08:30 ends at 19:00, and a 13.5-hour night from 19:00 ends at 08:30 the next morning, so the implied times are 08:30 to 19:00 and 19:00 to 08:30. A June 2025 GMFRS Enhanced Rescue Unit transfer advert on the government's Find a Job site is indexed by search engines with those same times, but the page had expired and we could not open it to confirm the wording, so we treat it as supporting rather than primary evidence.

The 12-hour proposal did not become the pattern. In July 2018 the Mayor of Greater Manchester announced operational changes for GMFRS that included 'family-friendly' shift patterns: firefighters would move to a 2-2-4 shift duty system, roster reserves would be removed so staff would know in advance which shifts they work and where, and a new policy would let firefighters choose their own annual leave. GMFRS's current careers pages still describe 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off. We have not seen a GMFRS document that states the clock times in its own words, so we present 19:00 as derived.

Four watches and the eight-day cycle, worked through

A 2-2-4 rota needs four watches to keep a station crewed around the clock. Every day needs one watch on the day shift and one on the night: eight days x two shifts is 16 shifts, and four watches x four shifts each is also 16. So each watch's block of two days and two nights starts two days after the previous watch's block. GMACS's article confirms that GMFRS refers to each shift team as a watch, but we could not find a current GMFRS page naming the watches or their order, so the table uses generic labels, Watch 1 to Watch 4.

In the table, D means the day shift starting at 08:30 on that date, N means the night shift starting at 19:00 on that date and finishing at 08:30 the next morning, and a dash is a rota day. There is exactly one D and one N in every column. The second night finishes at 08:30 on what is already the first rota day, and the watch is not back until 08:30 four days later.

This is a pattern illustration. It assumes the cycle runs continuously through the year without resetting for weekends or bank holidays, which is how a 2-2-4 rota normally works. Temporary moves between watches, detached duty, training courses and secondments will change an individual's dates.

How the eight-day cycle sits on a calendar

People searching for a 'GMFRS shift calendar' often expect a four-week grid that repeats. A 2-2-4 rota does not do that. A week has seven days and the cycle has eight, so each time a watch completes a cycle its next first day shift falls one weekday later. The weekdays only line up again after 56 days, because seven cycles of eight days equals eight weeks. Over that period a watch works every weekday and weekend roughly equally, so no one has a fixed 'Saturday off' pattern.

The table lays out four weeks for one watch that begins a cycle on a Monday; you can see the block slide one column to the right each week. Over a 365-day year a watch works about 45.6 cycles, roughly 182 shifts split evenly between days and nights. On 10.5-hour days and 13.5-hour nights that is about 91.25 x 10.5 plus 91.25 x 13.5, or 2,190 hours before leave, which is the same as 52.143 weeks x 42 hours, the divisor used in the national pay circular.

The four rota days after each block also move through the week. Any four consecutive days include a Saturday or a Sunday unless they run Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday, so about five rota blocks in every seven include at least part of a weekend. Day crewing at six GMFRS stations

GMFRS runs a second duty system at stations in lower-risk, lower-demand areas. Its day crewing page lists six: Horwich, Irlam, Littleborough, Marple, Mossley and Ramsbottom. Day crewing is still a full-time, 42-hour contract, but it is split between the station and home. GMFRS says the week averages 35 hours on station and 7 hours on standby at home.

On weekdays the on-station hours are 08:30 to 18:00, and the on-call period is 18:00 to 08:00. Saturdays and Sundays are normal working days starting at 08:30, but GMFRS says that once essential work is done the rest of the shift can be worked on call from 13:00. During station hours the response is immediate; during on-call hours GMFRS allows up to a four-minute delayed response, alerted by pager. That is why day crewing firefighters must live within a four-minute response area of the station, in their own or rented home or in accommodation GMFRS provides, which the page says it offers at Irlam and Ramsbottom.

Two details are worth knowing. First, 2023 press material about the Fire Cover Review described the on-call period as 6pm to 8.30am, while GMFRS's current page says 18:00 to 08:00; use the current page and confirm with the station. Second, GMFRS proposed adding day crewing at Sale and Offerton in 2023, but after consultation it confirmed those stations would keep crews on station 24/7 and day crewing would not be progressed there. GMFRS's page does not publish a weekly rota cycle for day crewing, so we do not invent one. The national picture is in our day crewing and LLAR duty systems guide.

Sale and Offerton were proposed for day crewing in 2023 but remain 24/7 wholetime stations after the consultation (GMFRS Fire Cover Review outcome, September 2023).

On-call, enhanced rescue and other rotas

Many county services use the on-call (retained) duty system, where firefighters live or work near a station and respond by pager while holding other jobs. GMFRS's careers pages we opened describe Wholetime Shift Duty and Day Crewing only, and we did not find a current GMFRS on-call firefighter vacancy or on-call station list. We could not verify whether GMFRS employs any firefighters on the retained duty system, so we do not state either way. If that is the route you want, our how to become an on-call firefighter guide covers services that recruit on-call staff.

Specialist rescue is moving inside the normal rota rather than beside it. GMFRS's September 2023 Fire Cover Review outcome confirmed Enhanced Rescue Stations at Leigh and Ashton, in which the same crews combine frontline firefighting with enhanced technical rescue, and an extra wholetime fire engine at Manchester Central, taking the fleet from 50 to 51 pumps. The June 2025 Enhanced Rescue Unit advert we could not open is indexed as saying ERU crews follow the same duty pattern as other stations; treat that as unconfirmed.

Senior officers, control room staff and non-operational staff work other arrangements. We did not find a current GMFRS document describing the flexible duty rota for Station Manager and above, or the North West Fire Control shift pattern, so this guide does not describe them. The flexi duty allowance guide explains how the national flexible duty system works.

Make your own dated GMFRS calendar, step by step

Because we could not verify a dated 2026 rota for any GMFRS watch, the reliable way to get a calendar is to generate one from a date you know. The free shift calendar generator takes your first day duty, the number of day duties, night duties and off-duty days in the cycle, and the number of weeks, then previews the roster and exports it as an ICS file for Apple Calendar, Google Calendar or Outlook. It runs in your browser, so your roster is not sent anywhere. For GMFRS the cycle is 2 day duties, 2 night duties and 4 off-duty days, which is the tool's default.

Two limits to know. The generator exports duties as all-day entries, so add 08:30 to 19:00 for days and 19:00 to 08:30 for nights yourself, after confirming those times with your station. It also generates up to 26 weeks (182 days) per run, which is not a whole number of eight-day cycles, so for the second half of the year start a new run 176 days (22 cycles) after your first start date, and delete any overlap. Leave, swaps, detached duty and training are deliberately left out.

  1. Confirm with your watch manager or issued rota the date of the first of your watch's two day shifts in the current cycle.
  2. Open the free shift calendar and enter that date as First day duty.
  3. Set day duties to 2, night duties to 2, off-duty days to 4 and weeks to 26.
  4. Preview the roster and check the next few shifts against your issued rota before exporting.
  5. Download the ICS file, import it, and add the start and finish times your station confirms.
  6. For the rest of the year, run the generator again from a date 176 days after your first start date.
  7. Add annual leave, bank holiday arrangements, mutual exchanges and courses by hand.

Leave, bank holidays and swaps on the GMFRS pattern

GMFRS's careers pages say firefighters start with 30 days of holiday, rising to 33 after five years. That matches the national Grey Book structure of 25 days of Scale A leave, 5 days of Scale B and up to 3 long-service days, explained in our firefighter annual leave guide. GMFRS's 2018 announcement said a new policy would let firefighters choose their own annual leave. We have not opened GMFRS's current leave policy, so check how leave days are counted against shifts and rota days and when the leave year runs.

On a 2-2-4 rota, how many shifts a block of leave covers depends on where it lands in the cycle. Eight consecutive days away always cover four duties, but a shorter block can cover none or several, and because the cycle walks one weekday a cycle, a block that misses a bank holiday weekend one year may hit it the next. The free annual leave calculator shows what you hold.

On public holidays, the national terms provide double time (not pensionable) plus a day in lieu for working one, and a day in lieu for being off on one; see firefighter bank holiday pay. GMFRS's day crewing page adds that day-crewed staff can work on call from home on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday and Easter Monday once essential duties are complete. We did not find a published GMFRS procedure for mutual exchanges of duty, so ask your watch manager how swaps are requested and approved.

What the pattern means for hours and pay

GMFRS pays the national NJC rates: its careers pages quote £31,539 for a trainee and £40,358 for a competent firefighter, the same figures as the national development and competent rates from 1 July 2026. The national hourly rate is annual salary divided by 52.143 and then by 42, giving £18.43 for a competent firefighter and £27.65 at time and a half. That 2,190-hour divisor is exactly what the 2-2-4 pattern delivers in a year before leave.

As a sense of scale only, one 10.5-hour day shift at the competent overtime rate is 10.5 x £27.65, about £290, and one 13.5-hour night is about £373. How GMFRS actually books and pays extra shifts, including any minimum payment, is set locally, so do not treat these as payslip forecasts. Day-crewed firefighters receive a 17.5% pensionable allowance for the on-call element, which our GMFRS pay scales guide covers with the CPD and other payments we could source.

The pay calculator turns any salary, including one with allowances, into take-home pay, and the overtime calculator lets you test extra shifts.

Checklist: confirm your Greater Manchester rota before you rely on it

GMFRS does not publish a brigade-wide dated calendar that we could find, and the clock times rest partly on dated or secondary sources, so a short checklist is the safest way to use this guide. Ask for the written start and finish times for your station, the date of the first day shift in your watch's current cycle, and your watch name.

If you are a candidate, GMFRS's FAQs say wholetime firefighters apply to work anywhere in Greater Manchester and are placed according to organisational need, so you will not know your station or watch until you are posted. Initial training is an 18-week recruits course within a Level 3 apprenticeship, which may run to a different weekly schedule from the watch rota, so ask the recruitment team what hours the course follows. If you are moving from another service, the transfer between fire services guide covers what to check, and the London Fire Brigade shift pattern guide shows how a near-identical 10.5/13.5 rota runs in London.

  • Written start and finish times for day and night shifts at your station.
  • The date of the first day shift of your watch's current cycle, and your watch name.
  • Whether your station is wholetime, day crewing or an Enhanced Rescue Station.
  • How leave blocks, bank holidays and rota days are counted.
  • How mutual exchanges of duty are requested and approved.
  • For day crewing: the response-area boundary, housing options and the weekend on-call rules.

Frequently asked questions

What shift pattern do GMFRS firefighters work?

GMFRS's careers pages describe a 42-hour week on a structured pattern of 2 days, 2 nights and 4 days off. That is an eight-day 2-2-4 cycle. Six stations use day crewing instead, with on-station days and on-call nights from home.

What time do GMFRS shifts start?

A May 2026 interview with a GMFRS Watch Manager says the day shift starts at 08:30 with the change of watch. A 2016 report gave 10.5-hour days and 13.5-hour nights, which implies 08:30 to 19:00 and 19:00 to 08:30. GMFRS's own pages do not state the times, so confirm with your station.

Which GMFRS stations are day crewed?

GMFRS lists Horwich, Irlam, Littleborough, Marple, Mossley and Ramsbottom. Crews are on station 08:30 to 18:00 on weekdays and on call from home 18:00 to 08:00, averaging 35 hours on station and 7 on standby a week.

Is there a GMFRS shift calendar for 2026?

We could not verify a dated 2026 calendar for any GMFRS watch, so we do not publish one. Use the free shift calendar generator with the date of your watch's first day shift and 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off, then export it to your own calendar.

How many watches does GMFRS have?

A 2-2-4 rota needs four watches to cover every day and night, and GMFRS refers to each shift team as a watch. We could not find a current GMFRS page naming the watches, so check your watch name with your station.

Do GMFRS firefighters work 12-hour shifts?

Not on the sources we found. In 2016 GMFRS proposed 12-hour days and nights to replace 10.5-hour days and 13.5-hour nights, but in July 2018 it announced a family-friendly 2-2-4 shift duty system, and its current pages describe 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off.

How much annual leave do GMFRS firefighters get?

GMFRS says firefighters start with 30 days of holiday, rising to 33 after five years. Public holidays are handled under the national terms, with double time and a day in lieu for working one.

Does GMFRS have on-call (retained) firefighters?

We could not verify this. GMFRS's careers pages we opened describe wholetime shift duty and day crewing, and we did not find a current on-call vacancy or station list. Ask GMFRS directly if you want an on-call role.
