Firefighter pay in Northern Ireland in 2026
Northern Ireland has one fire and rescue service, NIFRS, which serves the whole of a population of 1.9 million over more than 5,500 square miles, according to its recruitment adverts. Its firefighters are paid on NJC rates. The strongest evidence is NIFRS's own 2026 wholetime advert: it gave the salary range as £31,539 to £40,358 per annum, which matches the development and competent firefighter rates in NJC circular NJC/2/26 for 1 July 2026.
The wholetime vacancy (reference U050/07/2026) was posted in July 2026 with a closing date of 12 noon on Monday 3 August 2026, and asked applicants to be 18 or over by 1 April 2027. It described a firefighter's role as physically and mentally challenging, with a requirement to meet the standard of physical fitness and strength. Check the NIFRS website for the next campaign.
The rates for every role are in the table below. NIFRS uses its own job titles in places, so compare roles rather than titles. For the overall UK picture see firefighter salary UK 2026.

Development and competent pay at NIFRS
The NIFRS control vacancy states that candidates will commence on the development rate of pay, and NIFRS's careers information for firefighters describes a development programme in which you demonstrate competence in the role. That is the Grey Book model: a development rate while working under supervision and being assessed, and a competent rate once every applicable function has been assessed as achieved.
The Grey Book expects most firefighters to demonstrate competence within three years from entry. The gap between the two rates in 2026 is £8,819 a year, so the pace of assessment has a large effect on pay. Ask NIFRS for the written development programme and the date on which you would move to the competent rate.
The national trainee rate was removed from the NJC tables from 1 July 2025, which is why the 2026 range starts at the development figure, not a lower trainee rate. See trainee firefighter pay and firefighter pay progression.

A NIFRS Firefighter (Control) vacancy, reference C002/01/2026, a fixed-term three-year post based at NIFRS Headquarters in Lisburn, closed on 26 January 2026 and gave a salary of £28,865 (development) to £36,937 (competent), starting on the development rate. Those are 95% of the 2025 firefighting rates (£30,384 and £38,881), which is exactly the NJC rule for control-specific roles.
From 1 July 2026 the NJC control rates are £29,962 for a Development Firefighter (Control) and £38,340 for a Competent Firefighter (Control), with matching hourly rates of £13.68 and £17.51. Overtime for the competent control rate is £26.27 an hour. The control roles work 24/7 shifts because the centre runs every day of the year.

Take-home pay in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland taxpayers pay income tax at the UK rates that apply to England and Wales, so the same take-home arithmetic applies. The site's 2026/27 model assumes a 1257L code, the FPS 2015 employee contribution bands, no student loan and no extras. A competent firefighter on £40,358 pays £5,081.07 into the pension, £4,541.39 in income tax and £2,223.04 in National Insurance, leaving £28,512.50 a year, or £2,376.04 a month.
A development firefighter on £31,539 takes home £23,429.54 a year after an 11.09% contribution (£3,497.68), £3,094.26 income tax and £1,517.52 National Insurance, which is £1,952.46 a month. The pension deduction is a real reduction of net pay but builds a benefit; it is not lost. Your own figures depend on your actual contribution rate in the Northern Ireland scheme.
For every role see firefighter take-home pay 2026 and use the pay calculator to change assumptions.
| Role and stage | Gross basic | Annual take-home | Monthly take-home |

On-call and overtime pay in Northern Ireland
Where NIFRS uses retained (on-call) firefighters, the Grey Book's retained duty system provisions apply: the annual retainer for full cover (120 hours or more a week) is 15% of wholetime basic pay, £6,054 for a competent firefighter, with lower bands of 5%, 7.5%, 10% and 12.5% for less availability. Work activity is paid at the basic hourly rate, £18.43 for a competent firefighter, and each call-out attracts a £5.31 disturbance payment.
Overtime is time and a half for Watch Manager and below and double time on public holidays: £27.65 and £36.86 an hour respectively for a competent firefighter. Recall to a serious incident is paid for a minimum of three hours at double time. A competent firefighter recalled for three hours would earn £110.58 gross.
To put numbers on a busy month, imagine a competent firefighter who works 12 hours of pre-arranged overtime (12 × £27.65 = £331.80) and covers an 8-hour public holiday duty at double time (8 × £36.86 = £294.88). Gross additional pay is £626.68 before tax and National Insurance, and the public holiday element is not pensionable. Overtime is usually paid in arrears, so it appears on a later payslip than the month worked.
Contractual terms in Northern Ireland can differ in detail, so check your NIFRS contract. The on-call firefighter pay guide, overtime rates guide and on-call pay calculator give the national mechanics.
Pension and other terms in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland has its own firefighters' pension scheme regulations, and the contribution rate depends on your scheme and pensionable pay. The take-home tables on this page use England's FPS 2015 bands as an approximation, so replace the pension line with the figure on your payslip. The planned guide to the Northern Ireland firefighter pension scheme covers scheme rules.
Other conditions come from the Grey Book: a 42-hour average working week, at least two periods of 24 hours free from duty each week, annual leave, sick pay and public holiday arrangements. A full-time employee's basic hours average 42 including three hours of meal breaks in every 24 hours on the shift system. See firefighter sick pay and firefighter annual leave for the national rules.
If you are moving between Northern Ireland and another UK service, the guide to transferring between fire services covers how service history, pay stage and pension membership are treated.
Worked example: what the speed of assessment is worth
Because pay follows competence, the length of time you spend on the development rate has a direct cash cost. Hold the 2026 rates constant to keep the arithmetic simple. A recruit who becomes competent after 24 months earns £31,539 for two years and £40,358 in the third: £63,078 + £40,358 = £103,436 gross over the first 36 months. A recruit who takes the full three years to reach competence earns 3 × £31,539 = £94,617 over the same period. The difference is £8,819, exactly one year's gap between the two rates.
That comparison ignores future pay awards, CPD and any allowances, and it is not a forecast for anyone in particular. It does show why it is worth asking early about the assessment plan, and why the Grey Book's three-year expectation is a ceiling most people are expected to beat, not a target to wait for. If assessment opportunities are delayed for reasons outside your control, raise it with your line manager and your representative.
The same principle applies when you are promoted: a new role starts on the development rate and moves up when you are assessed. The firefighter salary UK 2026 guide shows what each promotion is worth in cash terms, and the promotion calculator lets you test your own case.
What could not be verified
To keep this guide honest, several Northern Ireland points are deliberately not stated as fact. This guide does not quote NIFRS's CPD amount, because the by-authority table in circular NJC/3/26 was not available to check; the FBU's 2026 page reports a UK range of £400 to £1,346. It also does not state Northern Ireland-specific allowances or any local pay supplement, because none was published in the sources checked.
The NIFRS website itself refused automated access during research, so the NIFRS adverts cited here were read on a reposting service, JobAlert.ie, which reproduced the vacancy text including reference numbers and closing dates. If a figure on the live NIFRS vacancy differs from this page, the live vacancy is the authority.
For your own case the reliable route is your contract, your payslip and your pay office. Ask in writing which stage you start on, how long the development programme is expected to last, when you would move to the competent rate and how any change is reflected in your pay. The payslip checker compares what you were paid with the national table, and the Personal Pay Report creates a personalised written summary.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a firefighter earn in Northern Ireland?
NIFRS advertised its 2026 wholetime firefighter vacancy at £31,539 to £40,358 a year, the NJC development and competent rates from 1 July 2026. Managers earn more on the national scale, for example £44,742 for a competent Crew Manager.
What is the starting salary at NIFRS?
New firefighters begin on the development rate, £31,539 from 1 July 2026. The NIFRS control vacancy states that candidates commence on the development rate of pay. Progression to the competent rate follows assessment against the role.
Do Northern Ireland firefighters follow the NJC pay awards?
NIFRS adverts show the NJC rates: £31,539 to £40,358 in July 2026, and control rates at 95% of the 2025 firefighting rates in January 2026. That is consistent with NJC pay awards being applied in Northern Ireland.
Is Northern Ireland income tax different?
No. Northern Ireland taxpayers pay income tax at the same rates and bands as England and Wales, so a £40,358 salary gives the same tax. Pension contributions depend on the Northern Ireland scheme and your pay band.
How much do NIFRS control room staff earn?
A January 2026 vacancy gave £28,865 (development) to £36,937 (competent). From 1 July 2026 the NJC rates for a Firefighter (Control) are £29,962 and £38,340, being 95% of the firefighting rates.
How much are on-call firefighters paid in Northern Ireland?
Under the Grey Book retained duty system, the full retainer is 15% of wholetime pay (£6,054 competent), plus £18.43 an hour for work and £5.31 per call-out. Lower availability attracts 5% to 12.5% retainers. Check your NIFRS contract for details.
