Eyesight and colour vision

Services assess vision against the requirements they publish and may ask about correction, surgery or colour perception. Bring an up-to-date optical prescription if requested and avoid relying on someone else’s historic campaign result.

Medical assessment

The assessment can consider cardiovascular and respiratory health, hearing, musculoskeletal function, medications and other factors relevant to firefighting. The occupational-health clinician needs accurate information to apply the standard safely.

Ask the right question

For a specific condition, ask what evidence the service needs and at what stage. A general website can explain process but cannot provide an occupational-health decision or replace clinical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can firefighters wear glasses or contact lenses?

Possibly, subject to the current service standard and individual assessment. Check before assuming either outcome.

Will a previous operation automatically disqualify me?

Not necessarily. The medical assessment considers current function, evidence and role demands.
